Essaouira Day Trip: Is It Worth It, and How to Do It Right

Essaouira is everything Marrakech is not: sea air, blue boats, a walled medina where nobody hassles you, and grilled sardines on the quay. It is also 2.5–3 hours away. Here is how to choose between a tour, a driver and the bus, what to see in the hours you get, and an honest word about the goats.

Be realistic about the time: 5–6 hours on the road for 4–5 hours in town. It is worth it, but if you only have two days in Marrakech, spend them in the city (2-day itinerary) and save Essaouira for a longer trip or an overnight.

Prices from operator and platform listings, checked October 2026; sources vary, so we give ranges. Check whether private prices are per car or per person.

  • Supratours leaves from its own terminal next to Marrakech train station, about 10–15 minutes by taxi from Jemaa el-Fna, and drops you just outside Essaouira's medina. Several departures a day; book a day ahead in summer and around Eid. Luggage is a small extra charge.
  • CTM uses its own station; journey time is similar, about 2.5–3 hours.
  • Shared grand taxis also run the route, leaving when full: cheaper than a private car, less comfortable, no stops. Ask your riad where they currently leave from.

How the day goes (shared tour)

  • 7:30–8:00: pickup from your riad's nearest access point or a meeting spot.
  • 9:00–9:30: coffee stop, then an argan cooperative (20–30 minutes; see below), and often a goat-tree photo stop.
  • 10:30–11:00: arrival in Essaouira. Some tours include a quick walk with a local guide; most just set you free.
  • 11:00–16:00: free time: port, ramparts, lunch, medina, beach.
  • 16:00–16:30: departure, back in Marrakech around 19:00.

What to see in 4–5 hours

  1. The port. Blue fishing boats, gulls, nets, the morning fish auction (earlier in the day). Go here first. Free.
  2. Skala du Port. The harbour bastion with the view back over the boats and the medina walls. Small entry fee (sources range from about 10 to 60 MAD; check at the gate).
  3. Lunch at the port grills. Choose your fish from the stalls by the port entrance and they grill it. Agree the price by weight before cooking: this is the one place in Essaouira you need to watch the bill. Medina restaurants are calmer, 80–200 MAD.
  4. Skala de la Ville. The sea ramparts on the north side of the medina, lined with bronze cannons, waves breaking below. Free. The famous view.
  5. The medina. UNESCO-listed, laid out on a grid by a French architect in the 18th century, so you cannot get lost. Thuya-wood workshops, galleries, the old Mellah. Relaxed shopkeepers; prices are often lower than in Marrakech.
  6. The beach. A long, wide bay south of the medina. Usually too windy for lying around, great for walking, camel and horse rides, and kitesurfing lessons.

Argan cooperatives and the goat trees (honestly)

Almost every tour stops at an argan oil cooperative on the road. You watch women crack the nuts by hand and grind them, you taste amlou (argan, almond and honey paste), and then you are shown the shop. Some are genuine women's cooperatives; others are shops using the word. Prices are higher than in town. Buy if you like it; nobody can make you.

Then the goats in the trees. Goats really do climb argan trees in this region to eat the fruit. But the roadside trees with ten goats arranged neatly in the branches are mostly staged: reporting since 2019 (including an investigation for the Born Free Foundation and coverage by National Geographic) described herders bringing goats to trees by the road, sometimes on wooden platforms, to charge tourists for photos, and raised welfare concerns. If you stop, the herder will expect a tip. You can ask your driver to skip it.

When to go

  • Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November): the most pleasant all round, fewer crowds.
  • Summer (June–August): the reason many Marrakech residents go. Highs usually in the low to mid 20s °C when Marrakech is near 40°C. Very windy, and busy with Moroccan families. Marrakech month by month.
  • Late June: the Gnaoua World Music Festival (the 2026 edition ran 25–27 June). Fantastic atmosphere, full hotels, heavy traffic.
  • Winter: mild, quiet, occasional rain. Fine for a day of walking and fish lunches.
  • Always: bring a windbreaker. The Atlantic wind is the town's signature.

Staying overnight instead

Our recommendation: if you can spare it, make Essaouira one night, not one day. Take the Supratours bus out in the morning, do the ramparts at sunset when the day-trippers have left, eat dinner in the medina, catch the port at 8:00 when the boats come in, and take an afternoon bus back.

  • Where to stay: a riad inside the medina; distances are short and the lanes are mostly car-free, so ask about the drop-off point.
  • Combine with a 3-day Marrakech trip: see the 3-day itinerary for how it compares with Ouzoud and Agafay.
  • Back in Marrakech for only a day? Use the one-day plan.

Essaouira day trip: frequently asked questions

Is Essaouira worth a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, but it is a long day: about 2.5–3 hours each way leaves 4–5 hours in town. That is enough for the port, the ramparts, a fish lunch and a walk through the medina. If you can, stay one night: the evening light on the ramparts and the quiet morning port are the best part, and you will not be rushing.

How much does an Essaouira day trip cost?

Shared minibus tour: around €20–30 per person. Private car with driver for the day: roughly €80–200 per car depending on the vehicle and how you book. Supratours or CTM bus: around 80–130 MAD each way per person. In town, the only paid sight is the harbour bastion (Skala du Port), a small fee; lunch at the port fish grills or a medina restaurant is 80–200 MAD.

Are the goats in the argan trees real?

Goats really do climb argan trees to eat the fruit, and you may see it in the countryside. The trees right next to the road with a dozen goats perfectly arranged in the branches are a different thing: investigations reported herders placing goats there, sometimes on platforms, to charge passing tourists for photos. If you stop, expect to tip the herder; if that bothers you, ask your driver to skip it.

Bus or tour to Essaouira?

For a day trip, a shared tour or private driver: they pick you up, stop on the way and give you more hours in town. The Supratours bus is cheaper and comfortable but takes about 3 hours, leaves from the station near the train station (not your riad) and has fixed return times, so it suits an overnight stay better than a day trip.

When is the best time to visit Essaouira?

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant. In summer Essaouira is a welcome escape from Marrakech heat, with highs usually in the low to mid 20s °C, but it is windy (great for kitesurfers, less so for the beach) and busy. Late June brings the Gnaoua World Music Festival, when the town fills up and rooms are scarce. Winter is mild and quiet, with the occasional rainy day.
