The rule: use the official taxi rank outside arrivals, not a driver who approaches you inside the terminal, and agree the total price before anyone touches your bags. Opening quotes of 200–300 MAD for a daytime ride to the Medina are common and several times the set fare.

Fares checked October 2026 against several 2024–2026 sources; they do not all agree, so we give ranges. Check the board at the taxi rank on arrival.
The petit taxi: what it should cost
In practice, airport taxis work on flat fares, not the meter. The authorities set flat fares by zone; in 2024 these were reported at 80 MAD by day and 120 MAD at night for petits taxis to the central zone (Medina, Gueliz, Hivernage), with higher fares for zones further out such as the Palmeraie. Up to three passengers fit in a petit taxi; groups of four or more need a grand taxi or a minivan, which costs more.
- What actually happens: drivers quote 100–150 MAD by day and 150–200 MAD at night. Paying 100 MAD in daylight is normal and not worth a fight. Paying 300 is not.
- How to handle it: walk out to the rank, say where you are going, ask "how much?" and agree before loading. If the price is silly, say the set fare and walk to the next car.
- Have small notes. "No change" is a classic. Break a 200 MAD note at a café or shop in the terminal first.
- The night supplement (roughly +50%) starts in the evening; sources say from about 20:00, some say later.
Once in town, petits taxis between the Medina and Gueliz cost 20–40 MAD. Getting back to the airport from the Medina is usually quoted at 100–150 MAD; inDrive often comes in cheaper.
Bus line 19
- Price: about 30 MAD one way, paid on board. Some drivers sell a return; ask, and keep the ticket.
- Stop: across the car park from arrivals, signposted.
- Route: a loop towards the Medina (Jemaa el-Fna and Koutoubia area) and the train station. Check the route map at the stop or on Google Maps, which was accurate in recent reports.
- Hours: roughly every 20–30 minutes from about 6:00; last bus somewhere between 21:30 and midnight depending on the source. Not one to rely on for a late arrival.
- Reality check: it is crowded and not designed for big suitcases, and from the stop near Jemaa el-Fna you still have to walk to your riad. Good value for one backpack in daylight.
How riad arrivals actually work
This is the part nobody explains. Most of the Medina is car-free, and many riads sit at the end of lanes a metre wide. Any taxi, app car or transfer will stop at the nearest point a car can reach: a gate (Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour, Bab Ksiba…), a small square or a car park.
- Before you fly, ask the riad for its drop-off point and save it on your map. Send your flight number and arrival time.
- Ask them to meet you there. Most riads send someone, often with a porter and a handcart for your bags. This is normal and usually free or included with their transfer.
- If no one comes, call the riad. Do not follow a stranger who says he knows it; he will, and he will want paying.
- Independent porters with handcarts wait at the main gates and car parks. Agree the price before they load the bags; a few tens of dirhams is normal for a short walk.
Our advice for a first trip: book the riad's own transfer or a platform transfer with "meet and greet". You pay a bit more than a taxi, but the driver knows the drop-off point and someone walks you to the door.
Arriving at night
- Taxis are there until the last flight; expect the night fare.
- Do not plan on the bus after about 21:00.
- Pre-book if you are staying deep in the Medina. The lanes are dark, many riad doors are unmarked, and phone maps lose the plot in the covered souks.
- Gueliz and Hivernage hotels are on proper roads: a taxi to the door is fine at any hour.
- Food: the square stays lively until about midnight; most riads can leave a plate if you tell them in advance.
Before you leave the terminal
- Cash: the dirham cannot be bought in advance in most countries. Use an ATM in the terminal; exchange desks give worse rates. Take enough for the taxi, tips and the first day (monuments want cash).
- SIM card: Maroc Telecom, Orange and Inwi have stands in arrivals. Passport needed. Prices vary by promotion; reports from 2024 put data packs around 200 MAD, and town shops are often cheaper. An eSIM bought before you fly avoids the queue.
- Apps: install Careem and inDrive on the plane wifi or before you leave home.
- First stop in town: if you arrive in the morning, read our one-day or two-day itinerary, and check whether you still need to book Majorelle (live availability).
- Know the tricks: the airport taxi is the first of several common hustles; none is dangerous, all are avoidable.
Marrakech airport transport: frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the Medina?
The fares set by the Marrakech authorities for petits taxis from the airport were reported in 2024 as 80 MAD by day and 120 MAD at night for the city zone that includes the Medina and Gueliz. In practice most visitors are quoted 100–150 MAD by day and 150–200 MAD at night. Anything around 300 MAD is a tourist price: say no and ask the next driver, or check the board at the rank.
Is there a bus from Marrakech airport to Jemaa el-Fna?
Yes, line 19. It stops outside arrivals, costs about 30 MAD one way (cash on board) and runs roughly every 20–30 minutes from early morning until the evening. It goes towards Jemaa el-Fna and the train station. Sources disagree on the last departure (between about 21:30 and midnight), so do not count on it for a late flight.
Do Uber, Careem or inDrive work at Marrakech airport?
Uber does not operate in Morocco. Careem and inDrive both work in Marrakech and show the price before you accept; reported airport-to-centre fares are around 70–100 MAD. Pickups at the terminal are not always smooth, so have a backup (the taxi rank or a booked transfer).
Can a taxi drive to my riad?
Usually not to the door. Most Medina riads are on lanes too narrow for cars. The driver stops at the nearest gate, square or car park and someone from the riad meets you there, often with a porter and a handcart for the bags. Ask your riad for the exact drop-off point and send them your flight number. This is the main reason first-time visitors book a transfer.
Where do I get a SIM card and cash at Marrakech airport?
Maroc Telecom, Orange and Inwi all have stands in the arrivals hall; bring your passport for registration. Some promotions give a free starter SIM, but recent reports describe paid data packs around 200 MAD (~€20). Town shops are often cheaper. For cash, use an ATM in the terminal rather than the exchange counter; take out enough for the taxi plus your first day.
Is it safe to arrive in Marrakech at night?
Yes. The airport is small and the taxi rank runs until the last flight. The issues are practical: the night fare is higher, the bus may have stopped, and the Medina lanes are dark and confusing with a suitcase. Book a transfer or arrange for your riad to meet you at the drop-off point. More in Is Marrakech safe?
