The Bacha Coffee queue: how it works and how to beat it

There is one line outside the museum door for everyone: museum visitors and coffee drinkers. The line moves as tables free up inside, which is why it is slow. No reservations are taken, by phone or online.

The palace and the museum

  1. The riad garden. A large courtyard of orange trees, fountains and black-and-white paving, framed by carved cedar and zellige. This is the photo.
  2. The reception rooms. Painted and carved ceilings, stucco and huge doors: the decoration of a household built to impress French generals and foreign visitors in the 1910s–1950s.
  3. The exhibitions. The Musée des Confluences shows art and objects on the meeting of cultures in Morocco (Amazigh, Arab, Jewish, African, Andalusian), with temporary shows that rotate. Small, well lit and labelled.

The man behind it, Thami El Glaoui, was pasha of Marrakech for more than four decades and lost his power at independence in 1956. The Fondation Nationale des Musées restored the palace and King Mohammed VI opened it as a museum in 2017.

Getting there

  • On foot from Jemaa el-Fna: 15 minutes north-west through Mouassine. From Le Jardin Secret, 5–10 minutes.
  • Taxi: ask for "Dar El Bacha"; cars can get close via Bab Doukkala. 20–30 MAD from Gueliz on the meter.
  • Address: 65-69 Riad Laârous, route Dar El Bacha, Medina.

Dar El Bacha & Bacha Coffee: frequently asked questions

How much is Dar El Bacha?

The museum (Musée des Confluences) costs 60 MAD for foreign visitors, 25 MAD for Moroccans and 15 MAD for Moroccans under 18, per the Fondation Nationale des Musées. If you only want Bacha Coffee, visitors in 2025–2026 report a separate café-only ticket of about 10 MAD at the same desk.

Do you need a museum ticket to go to Bacha Coffee?

You need to go through the museum entrance, but not necessarily buy the full museum ticket: recent visitors describe a cheap café-only ticket (around 10 MAD). Tell the desk what you want. The queue, however, is the same for everyone.

How long is the queue for Bacha Coffee?

Often 1 to 2.5 hours in high season and on weekends; some visitors report up to 3. There are no reservations. The best tactic is to be in line by 9:30 for the 10:00 opening, or to come in mid-afternoon after the lunch rush.

What are the opening hours of Dar El Bacha?

Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 – 18:00. Closed on Mondays. Bacha Coffee follows broadly the same days and hours; during Ramadan the café opens only in the evening. Check on site before you go.

Is Dar El Bacha worth visiting without the coffee?

Yes. For 60 MAD you get one of the most elaborate early-20th-century palaces in the Medina: a big riad garden, carved cedar doors, painted ceilings and zellige, plus a small rotating exhibition. It is calmer than Bahia and takes 45 minutes to an hour.

How much does Bacha Coffee cost?

Coffees start at around 44 MAD, single-origin and rare coffees run 70–80 MAD and up, pastries from about 35 MAD, a breakfast set around 190 MAD and a full lunch about 300 MAD a person. Cards are accepted; tip in cash.

Who built Dar El Bacha?

It was the residence of Thami El Glaoui, pasha of Marrakech from 1912 and the most powerful man in southern Morocco under the French protectorate. The palace dates from around 1910. Restored by the Fondation Nationale des Musées, it opened as the Musée des Confluences in 2017.
