Atlas Mountains Day Trip: Imlil, the Three Valleys & How to Choose

An hour and a half from Jemaa el-Fna the road climbs into the High Atlas: red-earth Amazigh villages, walnut terraces and, from December to April, snow on the 4,000-metre peaks. The question is not whether to go but which trip: a real walk from Imlil, or the easy Three Valleys loop.

In one line: pick an Imlil tour with at least 2 hours of walking if you want the mountains; pick a Three Valleys tour if you want views without effort. Both cost less than a dinner in Gueliz.

What a typical day looks like

  1. 8:30–9:00 pickup at your riad or the nearest car-accessible point.
  2. The road south through Tahnaout to Asni, with the Atlas filling the windscreen. Most tours stop at a viewpoint, and many at an argan or Amazigh cooperative (no obligation to buy).
  3. Asni, a market town with a Saturday souk, then 17 km of switchbacks up the Rheraya valley.
  4. Imlil (1,740 m): the walk to Aroumd and its waterfall, 2–3 hours, with mint tea in an Amazigh house.
  5. Lunch on a terrace with a view of the Toubkal massif.
  6. Back in Marrakech around 17:00–18:00. On a Three Valleys tour, the camel ride usually comes on the way back.

Paths are rocky and steep in places. Trainers with grip are fine for the easy walks; boots for anything above Aroumd. Altitude is low enough that you will not feel it on a day walk, but the sun is strong.

When to go

  • March – May: the best. Blossom in the valleys, snow still on the peaks, comfortable walking.
  • June – September: an escape from 38°C in Marrakech; Imlil is 8–10°C cooler. Haze hides the high peaks; start early.
  • October – November: walnut harvest, golden poplars, clear air. Excellent.
  • December – February: snow on the summits, sometimes in Imlil; nights below zero. Beautiful, but bring real warm clothes and accept that storms can close the road for a day.

Month-by-month weather for the city: best time to visit Marrakech.

What to bring

  • Walking shoes with grip, and socks you do not mind getting wet at the waterfall.
  • A warm layer and a windproof, even in summer: it is cooler at 1,800 m and the weather turns.
  • Sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, 1.5 litres of water.
  • Cash in small notes for tea, tips, a mule or a souvenir; do not count on finding an ATM in the mountains, so bring dirhams from Marrakech.
  • Modest clothing: these are conservative villages. Shoulders and knees covered is respectful.

Things nobody tells you

  • Read the walking time. Many "Atlas & Three Valleys" tours spend more time at shops and a camel stop than on foot. If walking matters, choose a tour that names Imlil and states hours of hiking.
  • The 2023 earthquake hit this area hard. You will see rebuilt houses and some still under repair. Visiting is welcomed; buying lunch and hiring local guides is the best help.
  • Carsick? The road from Asni to Imlil is all bends. Sit at the front and eat a light breakfast.
  • Overnight is better than a day. If you have the time, a night in an Imlil guesthouse gives you the evening light and an early walk before the day-trippers arrive.
  • Camel rides: short and touristy. Check the animals look well cared for; skip if not.

Atlas Mountains day trip: frequently asked questions

How much is an Atlas Mountains day trip from Marrakech?

Shared "Three Valleys" minibus tours start around €15–30 per person, often with a camel ride and lunch. An Imlil day with a mountain guide, a real walk and lunch is about €25–60 in a small group. A private car with driver and guide costs roughly €50–100 per person for two, less per head for a family.

Imlil, Three Valleys or Ourika: which one?

Imlil if you want to walk: it sits at 1,740 m under Toubkal and the trails start in the village. Three Valleys if you want views from a minibus, short stops and a camel ride with little effort. Ourika if you want waterfalls and riverside lunch closer to the city; see our Ourika Valley guide.

How far is Imlil from Marrakech?

About 65 km, 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 by car via Tahnaout and Asni. The last 17 km from Asni climb a winding mountain road. Tours leave Marrakech around 8:30–9:00 and are back by 17:00–18:00.

Can I climb Toubkal on a day trip?

Not sensibly. Toubkal (4,167 m) is normally a two-day trek from Imlil with a night at the refuge, and a licensed mountain guide is required. On a day trip you walk the foothills: Aroumd, the waterfall, or the Tizi n'Mzik pass for the fit.

Do I need a guide in the Atlas Mountains?

For Toubkal and longer treks, yes: the authorities require a licensed mountain guide. For short village walks around Imlil, tours include a local guide and it is the norm; it also keeps the money in the valley. A guide arranged in Imlil typically costs a few hundred dirhams for a half-day walk; agree the price beforehand.

When is the best time for an Atlas day trip?

March to May and September to November: green valleys, mild walking weather, clear views. In summer it is 8–10°C cooler than Marrakech and a good escape, but hazy. From December to March expect snow on the peaks, frost at night and, after storms, roads that close for a day.

Is it OK to visit after the 2023 earthquake?

Yes, and it helps. The September 2023 earthquake hit the Asni and Imlil valleys hard; roads and trails were repaired within months and guesthouses reopened, though reconstruction of some villages continues. Tourism is the main income here. Book local guides and eat in the villages.
