Marrakech in One Day: The Plan That Actually Fits

Whether you are here between flights, off a cruise coach, or in from Essaouira or an Agafay camp for the day, one day in Marrakech works if you stop trying to see everything. Here is the full-day order, a short version for 5-hour windows, and what each stop costs.

Decide on Majorelle first. It is the only stop you cannot walk into: tickets are online only with a fixed slot, and there is no ticket desk at the gate. If you cannot get the 8:00 or 8:30 slot, either take a late-afternoon slot and reverse the day, or drop it and spend the time in the Medina. Sold out? What still works.

The full-day plan (8:00 to 20:00)

  1. 8:00 – Jardin Majorelle. First slot, before the groups. 45 minutes in the garden; the Berber Museum inside is worth 20 more if you have them. Skip the YSL Museum today. Tickets and prices.
  2. 9:15 – Taxi to the Medina. 20–40 MAD to Bab Doukkala or Jemaa el-Fna; agree the price or insist on the meter. inDrive and Careem work; Uber does not.
  3. 9:45 – Ben Youssef Medersa (50 MAD). The carved courtyard is the most photographed interior in the city, and still calm before 10:30. 40 minutes. Guide.
  4. 10:30 – The souks, heading south. Souk des Teinturiers (dyers), Souk Haddadine (metalworkers), Rahba Kedima (spices). Do not try to shop seriously; just walk. One hour.
  5. 11:45 – Le Jardin Secret (100 MAD, +40 for the tower). The quietest place in the Medina and the best view from the tower. 45 minutes. Guide.
  6. 12:45 – Lunch on a rooftop in the Mouassine quarter, 5 minutes away. Sit down properly: it is the only break in the day.
  7. 14:15 – Walk to Bahia Palace (100 MAD) via Jemaa el-Fna and Rue Riad Zitoun el Jdid, 20 minutes. The afternoon is calmer than the late morning. 45 minutes. Guide. Prefer ruins and storks? Do El Badi instead, 10 minutes further.
  8. 15:30 – Koutoubia gardens. Free, 15 minutes' walk west. The minaret in afternoon light, the rose gardens, a bench in the shade. What is free in the Medina.
  9. 16:30 – Jemaa el-Fna. Orange juice at a numbered stall (5–10 MAD), a slow loop of the square as the musicians arrive.
  10. 18:00 – Sunset from a terrace café over the square (25–40 MAD for a drink), then dinner at the food stalls (agree prices first) or a restaurant just off the square. Leave by 20:00 if you have a coach, flight or desert camp to get back to.

The short version: 4 to 6 hours

For cruise coaches, layovers and late arrivals. No Majorelle, no taxis inside the plan, everything on foot from Jemaa el-Fna.

  1. Koutoubia and its gardens (free, 20 minutes). Most coaches and taxis drop near here anyway.
  2. Jemaa el-Fna (free, 20 minutes). Cross it, orange juice, keep moving.
  3. The souks to Le Jardin Secret (100 MAD, 1.5 hours with the walk). The most "Marrakech" hour you can have.
  4. Ben Youssef Medersa (50 MAD, 40 minutes), 8 minutes from Jardin Secret. Or, if you are south of the square, Bahia instead.
  5. Back to the square for a terrace drink and the walk to your pickup.

Short on time and nervous about getting lost? A 3-hour licensed guide covering exactly this loop costs €15–30 in a group or €40–80 privately, and gets you back to your meeting point on time. Fixed deadlines are the one situation where a guide always pays off.

Cruise passengers, layovers and day-trippers

You are…Time in townWhat to do
On a cruise (coach from Agadir or Casablanca)4–6 hShort version. Book the ship's excursion or a guide who meets the coach. Majorelle only if a slot fits exactly.

In from Essaouira for the day6–8 hSupratours or a driver arrives mid-morning: start at Ben Youssef, skip Majorelle unless you booked an afternoon slot. Essaouira guide.
Staying at an Agafay campFull dayCamp transfer at 8:00–9:00, the full plan from step 3, back to the camp after sunset. Agafay guide.

Tips for a one-day visit

  • Wear real shoes. The lanes are uneven and the mopeds do not stop. You will walk 7–9 km.
  • Do not follow anyone who offers to show you the way or tells you something is closed. Nothing on this list closes at lunch. Read the common Marrakech hustles before you go.
  • Summer: from June to September, swap the order: Medina interiors in the morning, Majorelle on a late slot, and stay out of the sun from 13:00 to 16:00. Best time to visit.
  • Friday: many souk shops close for an hour around midday prayers. Monuments stay open.
  • With children: drop the medersa, add a calèche ride around the walls. Marrakech with kids.
  • Feeling safe? The Medina is busy and well policed by day; the issue is hassle, not crime. Is Marrakech safe?
  • Got a second day after all? Switch to the 2-day or 3-day itinerary.

One day in Marrakech: frequently asked questions

Is one day in Marrakech worth it?

Yes, as long as you accept that you are sampling, not seeing everything. One well-ordered day covers Majorelle, one palace or the medersa, the souks, Le Jardin Secret and Jemaa el-Fna at dusk. What you lose is the slow part: the hammam, the long lunch, the second evening on the square. If you can turn it into two days, the 2-day plan is far less rushed.

Can I do Marrakech on a cruise stop?

Cruise ships do not dock in Marrakech; it is inland. Passengers usually come by coach from Agadir or Casablanca, roughly 3 hours or more each way, which leaves 4–6 hours in the city. In that window, skip Majorelle unless you can book a slot that fits the coach timetable, and concentrate on the Medina: Koutoubia, the souks, one monument and the square. A ship excursion or a guide who meets the coach saves the most time.

I have a long layover at Marrakech airport. Can I see the city?

With 7 hours or more between flights, yes. The airport is about 6 km from the Medina, 15–25 minutes by taxi. Allow 2 hours back at the airport before an international departure. That leaves 3–4 hours: Koutoubia, Jemaa el-Fna, a loop of the souks and Le Jardin Secret or Bahia. See the airport to Medina guide for fares.

What must I book in advance for a day in Marrakech?

Only Jardin Majorelle: it is sold online only, in 30-minute slots, and morning slots sell out in high season. Check the live availability page before you fix your day. Everything else in this plan is pay at the door.

How much does a day in Marrakech cost?

Entry fees for the full plan are about 420–460 MAD (~€40–43) per person: Majorelle 170, Ben Youssef 50, Le Jardin Secret 100 (+40 for the tower), Bahia 100. Add 60–120 MAD for taxis, 150–400 MAD for lunch, snacks and dinner. Roughly €70–100 per person without a guide.
